Victorian NPL and grassroots clubs have been given a huge boost on the eve of their local seasons, with the state government providing grants for the 2021 season.

Grants of $5000 are available to clubs, with many having struggled financially after Covid forced the cancellation of all Victorian senior and junior competitions in 2020.

The Victorian NPL season kicks off tonight, with Port Melbourne hosting Melbourne Knights and the Dandenong derby with City travelling to Thunder.

The potential $5000 cash boost is available to develop a business plan for clubs, many of whom might see 2021 as a perfect time to reset after a disrupted 2020.

North Geelong Warriors president and W Sports and Media CEO John Didulica said this was a glorious opportunity for clubs to access much-needed funds.

“Volunteers within community sport – even those with longstanding corporate careers – can really get caught in the weeds when managing a club. There are so many urgent needs to attend to that it can impossible to lift your gaze and plan for the future,” Didulica said.

“This grant opportunity from the Victorian Government allows clubs to access funding and specific expertise than can help future proof clubs and give them a real plan for their futures – one that goes beyond the committee for that given year.”

The potential cash injection is a welcome boost to clubs, many of whom battled with Melbourne and Victoria’s strict lockdowns, including a hard 112-day lockdown that made it impossible for state league seasons to be played, and consequently dried up revenue streams for clubs.

The Sporting Club Grants Program contributes to the Victorian Government’s sport and active recreation policy priorities and is available to all sports.
