Heading into the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, Riley was a little-known sprinter hailing from the humble small town of Beaudesert in Queensland’s Scenic Rim Region.
Without a sponsor, she worked at the deli section of her local Woolworths at the time, in order to support her athletics career.
However, that all changed on one night in Tokyo when she qualified for the semi-finals of the Women’s 200m race and followed it up with a now-famous post-race interview with Channel 7’s Jason Richardson.
Overnight, Riley popularity blew up and she amassed over 100,000 Instagram followers. This enabled WSM to leverage Riley’s new popularity along with her employment at Woolworths into a lucrative ambassador role with the supermarket giant.
