The Perth Wildcats begin their pre-season schedule with a two game series against the Cairns Taipans in Rockhampton, Queensland.

With two games against the Snakes, on Thursday 1 September and Saturday 3 September, the Wildcats will be keen to get up to speed against NBL opposition after a solid start to their pre-season training.

Despite a pre-season with some interruption, with Damian Martin and head coach Trevor Gleeson away from the team representing Australia at the Olympic Games, Gleeson said he was looking forward to the road trip to see what his team has learned thus far.

“It’s the first time the group has been together, there’ll be a lot of bumps along the way,” said Gleeson.

New imports Jameel McKay and Jaron Johnson will play their first games in a Wildcats uniform, while Angus Brandt will be looking to continue his excellent pre-season form in his team debut.

Wildcats captain Damian Martin (rest) along with backcourt teammates Jarrod Kenny (hamstring) and Greg Hire (finger) will miss both clashes with Cairns, opening the door for the coaching staff to trial SEABL standout Mason Bragg.

Bragg, 22, is a lively and versatile point guard who has been on the Wildcats radar for some time.

He recently averaged 9.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game for the NW Tasmanian Thunder in the SEABL.

“We’re a little bit light on with our guards, but we’ll certainly get some cobwebs out of the way and hopefully a good result.”

Corban Wroe and Rhys Vague made the trip to Queensland, and will be looking to impress.

Former Wildcats centre Nathan Jawai is likely to miss the meeting with his former side, having recently undergone finger surgery, though Taipans imports Travis Trice and Fuquan Edwin are in line to take the floor for their new club.

The Perth Wildcats face the Cairns Taipans in a two game pre-season series on Thursday 1 September and Saturday 3 September, with tip-off set for 5pm AWST for both clashes.
