Congratulations to WSM’s Kyle Chalmers on being nominated for the South Australia ‘Young Australian of the Year’ award in recognition for his outstanding achievements in the pool and in the broader community.

The nomination recognises Kyle’s sporting success in 2021 which included winning a Silver medal in the 100m freestyle final at the Tokyo Olympics and Bronze medals in the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 freestyle events respectively.

These impressive achievements came in the aftermath of a challenging 2020 for the swim superstar who battled several injuries – including shoulder surgery – to compete in Tokyo.

More recently, the 23-year-old Port Lincoln-native has secured four Gold medals across the 50m and 100m freestyle events at the Berlin and Budapest meets of the 2021 FINA World Cup to compliment his three wins for the London Roar in the International Swimming League meet in Naples.

Outside of the sporting domain, Kyle has been active in community work and promoting social reforms through various initiatives which he has been involved in.

He is a vocal advocate in the fight against racism and the empowerment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across the country through his work with ‘Closing the Gap’ and ‘Enough is Enough’ campaigns and in August took part in this video callout for the latter cause.

The Immanuel College alumni also supports and promotes the good work of the FightMND foundation, which is an Australian charity that works towards raising funds to find effective treatments and a potential cure for Motor Neuron Disease.

A passionate campaigner for water safety, he currently serves as an ambassador for VACSWIM, a program aimed at helping prevent drownings and encouraging children and parents to be safe around the water.

A proud South Australia, Kyle also serves as an ambassador to the South Australian Institute of Sport (SASI) and the South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre (SAALC) in Oaklands Park and is vocal proponent of getting kids involved into sport and physical activity.

The winner of the award will be announced on Thursday 21 October 2021 and the entire team at WSM are extremely proud of Kyle’s accomplishments being recognised through this nomination.
