Alex Carey
Hailing from Loxton in the Riverland region of South Australia, Alex Carey was originally a talented Australian Rules footballer who captained the Greater Western Sydney Giants before they entered the AFL. Upon returning home to Adelaide, Alex made a return to cricket, playing for the Glenelg Cricket Club and quickly earned a call-up for South Australia at a domestic level.
A specialist batsman who later converted himself into a wicketkeeper, Alex made his ODI debut for Australia in 2018 having starred for the Redbacks and Adelaide Strikers. In 2021, Alex’s career reached new heights when he captained the Australia ODI team and made his Test debut in the first test of the 2021/22 Ashes Series.
In December 2022, Alex scored his maiden Test century during Australia’s Boxing Day Test against South Africa, becoming only the second wicketkeeper to score a century at the MCG, and the first Australian wicketkeeper to score a Test century in nearly a decade.
Over the past 12 months Alex has proven to be a pivotal member of the Australian Test team. In March 2024, during the second Test against New Zealand, Alex equaled Adam Gilchrist's record for the most catches in a match by an Australian wicketkeeper, securing 10 dismissals. In the same match, he played a match-winning innings of 98 not out, guiding Australia to a successful chase of 279 runs and earning him the Player of the Match award.
In February 2025, Carey achieved a career-defining milestone during the second Test against Sri Lanka. He scored a remarkable 156 runs, setting a new record for the highest score by an Australian wicketkeeper in Asia, surpassing Adam Gilchrist's previous record. This innings not only showcased his batting prowess but also solidified his position as one of Australia's premier wicketkeeper-batsmen.
